Ngondro   Foundational Practices
In a direct and very practical way, these Foundational Practices of Tibetan Buddhism are methods, which allow us, most efficiently, to purify negativity and accumulate merit. They bring forth our fullest potential, while removing the veils which keep us from experiencing and expressing our Enlightened nature.

We begin with the Refuge Meditation followed by the Ngondro also called the foundational practices:

1.  Refuge with Prostrations
2.  Diamond Mind Meditation (tib. Dorje Sempa)
3.  Mandala-Offerings and
4.  Meditation on the Teacher (Guru-Yoga).

The foundational practices cut away countless hindrances and prepare us for the direct experience of our primordial nature.

After practicing a lot of Ngondro, one receives the Mahamudra teachings. It would not be very beneficial to teach the Mahamudra before finishing the Ngondro because you would not understand the teachings precisely. The mind must be purified in order to reach the Mahamudra.

Mahamudra: The "Great Seal" of reality. Buddha's promise that this is the ultimate teaching. It is manly taught in the Kagyu tradition and brings about the direct experience of mind. Mahamudra includes basis, way and goal and is the quintessence of all Buddhist teachings.
